Tour of Ulster 2012

‘The Tour of Ulster Cycling race’, which has been based in Dungannon for the past two years, is continuing it’s stead as “Ulster’s Premier Road Race” this year; as this weekend it runs from Saturday 5th to Monday 7th May 2012.  Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council are continuing as the principal sponsor for this years three day event. The race takes a similar format of three road stages each day and a short time trail on Sunday evening. The race is also being supported by Saltmarine Garages, JR Cycles, Cookstown Credit Union, Gallen Vehicle Hire and Slane Cycles, in running this event.

Entries are now closed for the ‘Dungannon &South Tyrone Borough Council Tour of Ulster’ for 2012 and with a full field of over one hundred riders, the competition will be tough.

Malcolm Elliott’s Node4 Cycling Team has entered four riders and one of them is Ulster man Philip Lavery.  Philip has had wins in the Hammond and Peter Bidwell Memorial Road Races this year and has won the Jim Traynor Award for the under 23 category twice, in the Tour of Ulster road race.

The Isle of Man have entered a team, lead by Andy Roche, a former ‘Irish Rás’ winner, who can never be over looked for overall contention. Ryan Sherlock of the Cycleways team has had an excellent start to his 2012 season, with an excellent second place result in the Kerry Group Rás Mumhan, over the Easter weekend. Ryan will lead an armada of riders from Southern Ireland, who will be bidding for the yellow jersey come Monday afternoon.

Stage one starts from Dungannon Leisure Centre on Saturday, the 5th May 2012 at approximately 11.30am, with the ceremonial flag being raised by the Lord Mayor Kenneth Reid. The stage will travel through Dungannon, Cookstown, Pomaroy, Carrickmore Ballygawley, Fintona, Sionfinn, Fivemiletown. Clogher, Augher, Aughnacloy, Eglish and finishing in Dungannon Park, at around 3.15pm, covering 88 miles.

Stage two will leave from Dungannon leisure Centre on Sunday, the 6th May 2012 at approximately 9.45am. The stage will travel through Dungannon, Cookstown, Lough Fee, Moneyneany, Ballyronan, Stewartstown, Bush Village and finishing on the Killyman Road in Dungannon at around 12.30pm ,covering sixty six miles.

Stage three is a short time trail of two miles, just off the Moy Road roundabout, on Sunday evening, the 6th May 2012.  The first rider will start at 4.30pm and the stage will finish at 6.30pm.

Stage four leaves from Dungannon Rugby Club on Monday, the 7th May 2012 at 9.45am. The stage starts at the Cohannon Inn, off the Tamnamore roundabout and will proceed for eleven laps of a 6.7 mile figure of eight circuit, finishing on the Killyman Road at approximately 1pm, bringing to a close the Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council Tour of Ulster Road Race for 2012.  For more details and results go to www.tourofulster.com

Tour of Ulster for 2012

The 2012 Tour of Ulster cycle race looks set to be one of the toughest in recent years with a high quality field due to line up for the Stage 1 start in Dungannon.

This year’s edition of the UCPC promoted event will be hosted in the Mid Ulster area from the 5th-7th May. One hundred of the top road men in Ireland & the UK will take to challenging Ulster roads to compete for the Graham-McLaughlin memorial trophy. Among the line up are top domestic & UK based riders & teams including Monaghan native Ryan Sherlock, All Ireland Veteran Time Trial Champion Greg Swinard, and Eurocycles’ 2010 Champion Adam Armstrong.

Over the weekend the riders will tackle three road stages and an individual time trial racing over 250 miles, mainly around the roads of Fermanagh and South Tyrone. The Tour of Ulster is a key event on the cycle racing calendar, particularly for riders aiming to compete in the An Post Ras just a few weeks later.

The Malcolm Elliot managed Norde Giordano Pro Cycling Team will compete this year, this strong squad will undoubtedly represent a real challenge to the home-based teams hoping to keep the title in the province.

The 2012 edition of the UCPC Tour Of Ulster is now open for registration.  The event will be raced from 5th May -7th May 2012.  Accommodation is available at the Cohannon Inn.  Early booking advisable

Ulster Cycles Promotions Club  is a voluntary club, with normally about ten members, which exists principally to organize the Tour of Ulster, but also other events.

The third annual St Patricks Festival race was run this year on 18th March, from Armagh to Downpatrick, with over 100 competitors and the race was won by 16 year old Sean Downey from Banbridge.

The “Irish News Belfast-Dublin two day held in the millenium year was also a UCPC promotion, as was the N.I.Milk Race and the Belfast City Councils “Centenary Race”.

All UCPC members are also Cycling Ireland members, drawn from ordinary clubs. All are lovers of the sport, prepared to work on a voluntary basis.

UCPC was formed in the late 1980’s,around the time as the new controlling body, the Federation of Irish Cyclists,(now Cycling Ireland).
